Kudos to Wayne State University for their recycling efforts. Since 2006, the school’s Living Green Task Force on Environmental Initiatives has been working diligently ”…to protect the environment and enhance the campus.” WDET-FM, Detroit Public Radio, licensed to Wayne State, is doing its part, too. Join the radio station for “Recycling at Eastern Market” on Saturday, June 7, from 9am-1pm. Learn more about what you can bring to the event, and please participate, if at all possible.

Posted in Arts & Entertainment, Music, Technology, Michigan, Detroit at 1:46 pm by Tim

All Systems Go!

All weekend, Detroit will crackle with some of the planet’s most exhilarating, inventive sounds. Movement 08 takes place May 24-26, and Walter Wasacz penned a terrific piece on the event in this week’s Metro Times. Get down to Hart Plaza but, first, learn the history of the fabled Amen Break. UPDATE: 5/27 - Model D put together a great slideshow of the event.

Michigan Triathlons

Posted in Sports, Michigan, Great Outdoors at 9:54 am by Tim

For some time now, I’ve been thinking about competing in a triathlon. I see there are plenty of such events this spring and summer throughout Michigan, and if anyone has advice on this matter, please let me know, because I’m sure it’s a challenge that requires serious preparation. Specifically, I’m looking for ideas on where a rookie like me could/should first test their mettle, i.e which of the triathlons (or duathlons), if any, on the page to which I link here might make for a good starting point. I’d rather not embarrass myself. Thanks for any insight.

New Perspective

Posted in Family at 8:25 pm by Tim

I’ve been dealing with a range of emotions. Sadly, my father passed away last Tuesday following a sudden illness and, understandably, I’ve been absent from these pages. The situation was dire, and the medical staff was candid, yet kind, about the likely outcome. However, at times there seemed hope for recovery, and the resultant mood swings could be wrenching. I loved Dad very much, and treasure the time we spent together. My thanks to the many family members and friends who offered their unconditional support to both me and my mother, as well as to my wife and daughter, during this difficult period. The experience has forever changed my perspective.

My wife, Mary Potts, (who took these lovely photos – click on any of the thumbnails for larger versions) and I attended the groundbreaking ceremony last Friday, May 2, for the new Growing Hope Center, located at 922 West Michigan Avenue in magnificent Ypsilanti, Michigan. Note: Three of the above images are bonus shots from Growing Hope’s Frog Island Community Garden.

Quite a well attended event, too. Ypsilanti mayor Paul Schreiber addressed the crowd, as did Andy LaBarre from U.S. Representative John Dingell’s office. Growing Hope Executive Director Amanda Edmonds and her staff have taken the next step in a program that continues to blossom in the community.

Arresting Site of the Month: Michigan Innovators

Posted in Business, Michigan, News, Video at 12:34 pm by Tim

Bud Gibson

Thanks to those of you who submitted nominations for the inaugural “Arresting Site or Blog of the Month” award, and I’m pleased to announce the winner for May: Michigan Innovators. I first ran across this terrific online destination last summer, which dovetails perfectly with the spirit of this blog, wherein I look to spotlight Michiganders who display creative zeal. Bud Gibson is doing just that. Along with Diana Wong – who now is in an advisory role Gibson founded the site in June of 2007, and has compiled an impressive archive of video interviews with business and community leaders across the state, including MicroMax’s Rachel McCormack, the Ann Arbor Film Festival’s Donald Harrison, Metro Parent’s Read the rest of this entry »

Way to Go, Magic Stick

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of taking in a show at The Magic Stick, you’ll know why Rolling Stone magazine calls it one of America’s “Best Rock Clubs.” I’ve seen many gigs there myself — Alejandro Escovedo being one of the most memorable – but it’s been some time since I’ve visited the Woodward Avenue mainstay, also a great place for events and parties.

U-M Commencement, Diag Memories

Posted in Education, Michigan, Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, Great Outdoors at 1:50 pm by Tim

Congratulations and bon voyage to the roughly five thousand of University of Michigan students from the graduating class of 2008 who participated in the school’s first-ever Spring Commencement on the venerable Diag, featuring keynote speaker Bob Woodruff. I wasn’t at the event last Saturday, but wandered through the area briefly on Friday, and enjoyed seeing the impressive setup and backdrop. It brought back memories of my own graduation at Crisler Arena many years earlier — won’t reveal exactly when that was, but the date was April 29, and let’s just say this is one of those “spike” anniversaries — and the untold number of times I dashed through the Diag on the way to class, sometimes barely looking up to enjoy the setting. Caught up recently with a U-M classmate of mine, Julie Yolles, and we both found it hard to believe how long it’s been since we donned cap and gown ourselves.

Leelanau Conservancy

Since 1988, they’re the folks who have “…worked tirelessly to protect the places that you love and the character that makes the Leelanau Peninsula so unique.” Happy 20th anniversary to the Leelanau Conservancy, which has a full calendar of spring and summer events in 2008, including the Cherry Blossom Tour on May 10. Truly one of the most beautiful parts of the state, perhaps the entire country.
