One of the major real estate companies in my area is advertising “Foreclosure Bus Tours,” all the better to show potential clients the sheer volume of such available properties in one session. I don’t have a problem with the company putting on these tours, because I’m guessing many people will be interested in signing up, but it’s just sad. I was speaking the other day with a dental professional, and she wondered if the economy has hit bottom, as many of her colleagues are struggling badly, given that many clients can’t even afford to get their teeth cleaned. Would have loved to answer yes about the economy having bottomed out, but I couldn’t. Ugh.

Thanks to those of you who submitted nominations for the inaugural “Arresting Site or Blog of the Month” award, and I’m pleased to announce the winner for May: Michigan Innovators. I first ran across this terrific online destination last summer, which dovetails perfectly with the spirit of this blog, wherein I look to spotlight Michiganders who display creative zeal. Bud Gibson is doing just that. Along with Diana Wong – who now is in an advisory role – Gibson founded the site in June of 2007, and has compiled an impressive archive of video interviews with business and community leaders across the state, including MicroMax’s Rachel McCormack, the Ann Arbor Film Festival’s Donald Harrison, Metro Parent’s Read the rest of this entry »

A friend and I used to joke about how you could get arrested in Michigan for saying ‘mass’ and ‘transit’ in the same sentence. But it’s an issue that, no pun intended, is gaining momentum in this state. Nettie Boivin of Mi Life Mi Times offers an insightful article on the topic, one deserving not only of further discussion but, more importantly, immediate action. In January, Metromode tendered a piece on an aspect near and dear to me: The Detroit-Ann Arbor commuter rail line. I’ve been banging that drum for some time, as the days when Detroit is separated from Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, both physically and psychologically, are long gone, no matter what certain residents of either region may think. Let’s get moving on this, folks. Do it for the planet and for your kids.

…for anyone in a creative/content position. The site offers an abundance of resources, from a daily newsfeed to industry job listings to online tutorials and courses, as well as its Freelance Marketplace and AvantGuild premium membership. I’ve utilized Mediabistro for years, and continue to find nuggets throughout its pages.

The visionary Seth Godin offers tips for us marketing types, whom he says can learn a thing or seventeen from what he dubbed “Galactic Interstellar Tuesday.” #15, in particular, is spot-on.

As I said yesterday before the game, had a strong feeling the Giants would upset New England. (I was wrong aboout the 28-27 guess, but didn’t everyone think there would be more points scored?) For those of us who’ve seen them all, was this the best Super Bowl yet? Top 3, at worst. Glad to see Charlie Brown finally come out on top, in a Coke ad clearly the best of this year’s high-priced commercials.
