Get Involved with 826michigan

Posted in Education, Michigan at 2:52 am by Tim

I did just that about a month ago with this “non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.” I’m tutoring students grades 6-8 at West Middle School in Ypsilanti, just one of the many participating schools. Rewarding, important, and often quite fun.

…for anyone in a creative/content position. The site offers an abundance of resources, from a daily newsfeed to industry job listings to online tutorials and courses, as well as its Freelance Marketplace and AvantGuild premium membership. I’ve utilized Mediabistro for years, and continue to find nuggets throughout its pages.

MiLife MiTimes

Posted in The Web, Michigan at 9:26 pm by Tim

Lest anyone think all the news coming out of Detroit and Michigan is dire, there is a Web site that trumpets the good things happening in this much-maligned region I call home. MiLife MiTimes launched in 2007, and is filled with user-generated, positive content.

That’s the delegate count, Obama vs. Clinton. As the late Phil Rizzuto might have said, we’ve got ourselves a barnburner.

Tuesday Split Decision to Help Obama?

Posted in Politics, Arts & Entertainment, TV at 3:37 pm by Tim

It’s possible that neither Hillary Clinton nor Barack Obama will have enough votes to automatically earn their party’s nomination. A brokered convention? Can you say ratings?! CNN says that, in fact, the voting split yesterday may help Obama, and that the next 2-3 weeks of primaries and caucuses may favor the Illinois senator.

Seth Godin

The visionary Seth Godin offers tips for us marketing types, whom he says can learn a thing or seventeen from what he dubbed “Galactic Interstellar Tuesday.” #15, in particular, is spot-on.

Super/Fat Tuesday

Posted in Politics at 3:56 pm by Tim

A great way to keep up with today’s primaries is at Newsvine’s political page. Here’s an interesting thread centered on the New York Times piece which posits the idea that Barack Obama is a Mac, and Hilary Clinton is a PC.

The Best Super Bowl Ever?

Posted in Business, Arts & Entertainment, Sports, TV at 3:07 pm by Tim

As I said yesterday before the game, had a strong feeling the Giants would upset New England. (I was wrong aboout the 28-27 guess, but didn’t everyone think there would be more points scored?) For those of us who’ve seen them all, was this the best Super Bowl yet? Top 3, at worst. Glad to see Charlie Brown finally come out on top, in a Coke ad clearly the best of this year’s high-priced commercials.

I Started Off for John Edwards…

Barack Obama and family

…and, since he’s out of the presidential race, have shifted my allegiance to Barack Obama. Bill Maher has been eloquent in this regard, talking about how America needs a new face, literally and figuratively, and the message it will send the rest of the world. On the most recent Real Time, Maher said something else interesting — and spot on – which I paraphrase: ‘Politics is cool again.’ It’s about time.
